We’re hardcore…or something
Sep 16th
My birthday was fabulous, I thought I would let you all know, because I’m sure you’ve been holding your breath. On Friday night we went out to dinner and drinks with some friends, and then proceeded to go back to our house (by way of a bar for me and DQ for Ryan) to continue the party with drinks and an ice cream cake. It was awesome.
Saturday morning we got up and it was pretty foggy, but that’s how a lot of mornings start off in Duluth in the fall and spring. So we packed up and went on our backpacking trip with our other friends, Chris & Erin. The day got brighter, and by the time we got to the trail head it looked like it was going to be gorgeous. And the hike out was. It didn’t start sprinkling until after we had camp set up. But it didn’t really stop sprinkling/raining until the middle of the night (I was sleeping, but I heard from Chris and Erin that the moon was shining on the lake at 4am). The morning was very dewey and overcast, and before we could get camp totally broken down it had started raining again. It rained for most of our hike back to the cars (about 2.5 miles I think). Obviously by the time we got back to the cars and then back to Duluth we were very thankful for a hot shower and a yummy meal at the Brewhouse. And then Ryan and I watched “Anatomy of a Murder” and went to bed. It was a very fulfilling weekend.
I honestly have to say that I’m glad we went camping. I really wanted to go backpacking this summer, and this was our first and only time all summer. But I really wish it hadn’t rained almost the entire time. We spent most of the time at camp in our respective tents or standing around shivering, waiting for the food to be done. We did go on a hike without our packs, and the forest up there was beautiful. It was all maple and birch, and the maples were just starting to turn. Unfortunately, because it was raining almost the whole time, we didn’t even take the camera out.
This week is “clean up our disgusting apartment!” week, I’ve decided. Especially after coming home with everything wet from backpacking, our place is a disaster. And it wasn’t helped by the fact that we went and “completed” one of our bridal registries last night, so now we have more stuff to put away. Not that I’m complaining! I love having curtains! And a roasting pan! And a card table and chairs so we can actually have people over to play games! But yah…we need to do some organizing/cleaning. ASAP.
Also, just to share; Oktoberfest is in 2 weeks! My grandparents on my mom’s side have been HEAVILY involved in their hometown Oktoberfest celebration since it started (I think Grandpa and Grandma may have been the initial instigators??), and my family tries to go every year. And by my family I mean me, as many of my sisters as can make it, as many of my mom’s siblings and their families as can make it (she has 7 siblings) and usually 1 or 2 of my grandparents’ siblings. We kind of take over (it’s a small town). And it is AWESOME. So yah. Ryan and I will be heading up north in a couple weeks to drink beer, eat yummy German food and dance the waltz, polka, schottish and two-step. And attend Polka Mass in a tent on Sunday morning. Because you can’t go to Oktoberfest without having Polka Mass with a live band in a tent. I will take pictures, don’t worry. Probably not of Mass, though. That’s kind of frowned upon.
In closing: a photo of my sisters and myself at a wedding we attended this summer. My youngest sister was a bridesmaid, hence the blue dress. Also, we are klassy at home, and some of us *cough*youngest sister*cough* keep cigarrettes in our cleavage. Or something. Don’t mock – you know we are fun!

Ahh…the weekend

It is finally Friday afternoon. We have plans to go out with some friends for dinner tonight, and we have tentative (weather dependent) plans to go backpacking with some friends tomorrow. And it is my birthday tomorrow. And these things make me extremely happy. Well, that and the fact that I just ordered 2 new sweaters from Victoria’s Secret for a total of about $3.50 including shipping and handling. Yay for giftcards that I didn’t realize I had! Also, what is wrong with me that I ordered sweaters and not undergarments*? I don’t know. Other than the fact that I now have no problem justifying the expense of undergarments* from Victoria’s Secret due to their far superior quality compared to Target undergarments.* So I therefore like to use a giftcard for something that I have a harder time justifying to myself. Or I just like clothes. Or something.
On a completely different note, I would like to share my theory of work-related motivation. I believe we each only have a certain amount of motivation each week. So if we are VERY motivated on Monday, by Friday we might have absolutely NO motivation. I believe that is exactly what happened to me. Over the course of the week I used up all of my motivation, and now there is none. Good thing it’s almost time to go.
*Knowing that there are some of my family and male friends that read this blog makes it awkward to talk about this. And yet I do it, using an even more awkward word like undergarments. Is there enough awkwardness yet? I hope so.
In closing, a picture or two from our wedding day:

Ryan and I between the wedding and reception/dance.

Ryan and I kissing near the lift bridge as a ship comes through. We had 2 ships come under the bridge while we were doing photos down there. This is one of the many fantastic shots our photographer got.
Blah…

I’m sorry for the lack of posting lately. I’ve been feeling very blah recently, and so didn’t get around to writing anything. Plus our “computer/spare room” has been pretty much taken over by my wedding dress, which I don’t really know what to do with. So I don’t go in there much.
We had an awesome weekend visiting friends in the Cities, and we apparently avoided some nasty traffic on the way home because only a few hours after we drove up 35E a portion of a bridge passing overhead collapsed onto it. You would think they would be watching the bridges around there a little closer, but who knows what happened. Anyway, it was like 4 or 5 hours after we had passed through that it happened, so it’s not like it was the car right behind us or anything. It’s hardly even worth mentioning, except that my life is rather boring lately and so I have to reach to find anything interesting to write about.
We are in Duluth from now until the 3rd week in August, when I will be driving to New York for a friend’s wedding. I’m very very excited about that trip, but we figured out how much it’s going to cost us, and holy crap! Traveling that far is expensive! Even in my little car that gets fabulous gas milage (42 mpg the weekend we went to Fargo and back). Oh well. It will be worth it, I’m quite certain.
I still haven’t figured out the photo posting, and Ryan’s response was “um, I’m not sure” and then to promptly forget that I even asked, so he’s been no help. I think it has something to do with the fact that we host the totallyserial website on our own server (who am I kidding?? Ryan hosts it on HIS server), and the photos aren’t on the server. That’s about all I’ve figured out though. So there will be some harrassing until he tells me what I need to do. A person can’t blog without photos. It’s inhumane.
Well, it’s about 5 minutes till quitting time. Thank God. Time to go home and zone out while watching Jon & Kate + 8 and reading my latest library find, The Host.
