This Thing Called Running
Aug 14th
I decidoed last week that I was going to start the Couch to 5k program. I like the idea of running for exercise because it’s high impact (you don’t need a lot of time to invest to get results). So last Wednesday I did my first program. I was on a treadmill at the Y. It was tough, but not impossible. I made it running the whole time I was supposed to.
That evening, I talked to my neighbour, Serina, and she said she was interested in running with me. I would much rather run with someone, so we decided to start going together on Friday.
We have now completed two days together. We’ll be running Sunday, Wednesday, Friday. We run on the lakewalk, which is great.
So far, the running is still hard for me. I get winded easily, and my body moves in ways I quash it wouldn’t. But that’s why I’m running, right? Today was especially hard. I think part of it was because it was hot, but part was me not drinking enough water throughout the day. I’ll have to pay attention to that.
We are thinking about signing up for some kind of 5k race around thanksgiving, although Ryan & I won’t be in town for the holiday, so it would have to be some other time.
I will try to keep up with entries about running as we progress through the program. Let me know if you have any advice!
Goals update
Feb 14th
Here’s an update on my progress toward my goals for the year:
-I filled out most of James’s baby book, although I still need to print photos for it, and there are a few things I need to ask Ryan/search my facebook history to figure out.
-I tried brussel sprouts at the very beginning of February, which was my “January” new ingredient. This weekend, we used green enchilada sauce to make chicken tacos, which was technically a new ingredient for me, so I’m counting it for this month. PS. those tacos were SO easy, and extremely delicious.
-I may not be cooking personally 2 times per week, but we have definitely cut down on our eating out in the past few weeks, which is the ultimate goal anyway. And we are eating better meals at home. Pasta with lots of extra veggies in the sauce, salad with every dinner, fresh fruit for snacks. Don’t get me wrong; we still definitely have some bad eating habits, but things are improving, and that’s good.
-I have started the process of organizing a camping trip with my parents/siblings and their families for this June. I’m so excited about this! I hope everyone can make it!
-I tried out a new restaurant; the Duluth Grill (featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives!). The food was good, and the service was terrific!
-James has started taking steps. He gets braver and braver each day in that regard. It is so cute to watch him. I’ll put him down a couple feet away from me and hold my arms out, and he stumbles over to me, falling into my arms at the end, and squealing. I love that kid.
-It’s not a “class,” but the open swimming Serina and I are taking the boys to is listed in the Community Education brochure, so I’m counting it. It’s something that is helpful to me (and to James), and it gets me out of the house once a week for something other than going to a store, which is good.
-Ryan and I went through our clothes and have 2 garbage bags full of stuff to give to Goodwill. Now it just needs to make it from our trunk to the Goodwill drop-off box.
I feel pretty good about my progress so far. How are you doing on your goals?
What day is it?
Jan 16th
I had a big paragraph about James’s sleeping schedule today and then about how even though I complain about having times when Ryan’s not around, I know it’s nothing compared to people who actually have to do the single parent gig. And then I realized that I was whining and deleted it. You are welcome.
I met my goals of making dinner twice last week (ham, mashed potatoes and peas one night, and quesadillas the other), and drinking 3 bottles full of water most days (at least 2 every day). One bottle is 24 oz. I’m pretty happy about that. I also have to pee a lot more, so there’s that. I also went through my clothes and sorted out the stuff I want to give to Goodwill, what needs to be packed away as pregnancy clothes, and what goes in the Halloween costume bin. I’m feeling pretty good about getting all that done, even though the kitchen needs cleaning, the living room needs vacuuming and the bedroom floor hasn’t been swept in an embarrassingly long amount of time. But at least we can see it now!
It is now time to finish this episode of 30 Rock and go to bed. Ryan tried laughing at me today for going to bed at 10:30 last night and Friday night, but then I pointed out that I would go to bed later if he wanted to get up at 7am with James. He rejected that pretty quickly.
Productivity
Jan 11th

I called the clinic today & made check-up appointments for all 3 of us. Check it off the list!
This is tonight’s dinner. Mashed potatoes, peas & ham. Yum.
Grandpa’s Sausage
Jan 7th

My grandpa makes this breakfast sausage, and it is delicious. Moist, and flavorful, and not greasy! Ryan and I were lucky and scored a few packages of it. Usually we save it for when we have company, but we were having breakfast for dinner, and it sounded like a good idea. It was a great idea. Yum…
Goal: make dinner 2 nights per week.
Dinner: Grandpa’s sausage; scrambled eggs with leftover onion, tomato, broccoli and cheese; and toast.
Verdict: Delicious!
