Day 02- The meaning behind your Blog name
Sep 28th
Taken from our “About Us” page, and then expanded a bit:
How the blog got its name:
For those that are wondering, the totally serial name was kind of an inside joke around our house a few years ago (although it was a very public show that first used the phrase). We are fans of South Park, and Al Gore was parodied on the show during a few episodes and kept saying “totally serial” instead of “totally serious.” For some reason, Ryan, Sam (our former housemate) and I have picked it up as a joking way to say that we are telling the truth or are serious about something. When Ryan and I were thinking about titles for a website (we are hoping to have more than just the blog, eventually), Sam suggested the phrase, and we agreed. We liked the double-meaning (get it; “serial” – like blog entries?? We are dorks, we know.), and we like the funny aspect. Plus, it was available.
So, that’s about it. Nothing very exciting, I’m afraid. Kind of like us most of the time.
Day 1: A recent picture of you and 15 interesting facts about yourself
Sep 27th

The 3 of us at my sister's wedding.
15 interesting facts, huh?
1. I have 3 sisters and 1 brother. And if you asked most of the people I knew all through elementary and high school, they would know I had sisters but would not know I had a brother. Probably at least one person that reads this will be surprised to learn I have a brother. His name is Josh, he is about 2 years older than me, and he is awesome. Just so you know.
2. I use this one all the time in those lame icebreaker games, but it will work here too; my parent’s house (the house I grew up in for the most part) is closer to Canada than to any town in the US. Also, the nearest mall is 2 hours away. I grew up in the definition of small-town USA. Except for the being so near Canada part.
3. My eyes are generally green, but look kind of yellowish depending on the light and what I’m wearing. Occasionally they look almost brown, I’ve heard, but I’ve never seen that.
4. It is still weird for me to say this, even after 5 years, but I am a licensed insurance agent in the state of MN. However, you should never take anything I tell you over the Internet as “licensed insurance agent” advice. Always talk to your own agent. Always. Now that the legal disclaimer stuff is out of the way…I work on insurance for businesses (like Workers Compensation, Property & General Liability stuff). I really like it most of the time. I know that’s weird. It’s ok. Mostly I like it because I don’t have to sell anyone insurance.
5. I played flute all through high school and my freshman year of college. But starting my sophomore year, I taught myself how to play trombone by watching the people next to me. Specifically my friend Rob (thanks, Rob!). I’m not very good, but it was enough to play in the pep band at UMD, and I loved it. I still can’t read bass clef music, though. I read it as though it’s treble clef. Whoops!
6. I was a crossing guard when I was in elementary school. There were 2 of us that were Catholic, and we had to do crossing duty every Wednesday morning because almost everyone else was at religious education at their (mostly Protestant) churches. The Catholics had religious ed on Wednesday nights.
7. I do not usually buy music. I like listening to the radio, or to Pandora or NPR. It’s not that I don’t like music…I just like the way I hear things I would never think to buy myself when I listen to Pandora or the radio. And NPR is awesome. Obviously. Also, I am cheap.
8. I watch entirely too much television, and I don’t feel bad about that (most of the time). We have a DVR, and it is one technology invention that I could NOT get rid of without suffering serious withdrawals. We record House, Bones, The Office, The Closer, Gossip Girl, Fringe, Dr Who, American Idol, Next Food Network Star, & Next Design Star (although I think we might be dropping that one). We also record Jeopardy, Good Eats and Iron Chef to have around during the slow TV times (between seasons especially). Other shows we watch if we happen to catch them, or we go in spurts watching them from Netflix (Dexter, Arrested Development).
9. I have a TERRIBLE memory. It’s actually a standing joke among some of my high school friends. One of them will say, “Becky, remember the time [fill in the blank with some major event that should stick in your memory]?” I will say, “No, I don’t remember that,” and they will go on to describe the event to me in detail. This happens with almost every single memory they bring up of high school/elementary school. I have a general memory of these times, and there are some things I remember specifically, although their relation to a certain year/time is not strong. I do not know why this is.
10. I am a fiercely loyal friend, and it takes a LOT for me to defriend (unfriend?) someone. I tend to be someone that just gets along with most people. Either that or they don’t tell me that we don’t get along and I just go forward in my ignorance. I like people, and I like being liked by people, sometimes to a fault.
11. I’ve known my husband for 10 years (approximately). We were friends for the first 5 or so of them, and only started dating seriously after we had both graduated and moved away from Duluth (we met in college). He’s one of my best friends, which I think is a good quality in a mate.
12. I didn’t know any of my roommates when I started college. I took the advice of all the college advisor types and sent a letter to all my roommates introducing myself (this was before e-mail and facebook were so prevalent). Based on that letter, one of my roommates (Alyson) who knew another woman that was going to live with us (Kate) thought that Kate might kill me before the first semester was over. We ended up all getting along really well, and I lived with Alyson for the rest of my college carreer. I just saw her last weekend, actually. I love her. I like Kate too, but she’s crazy and I haven’t seen her in years.
13. Alyson still spells my name BeckEy. Because for a couple years that’s how she thought it was spelled.
14. My nickname to my small group of friends in high school was Pami, because my dad wanted to name me Pamela when I was born, and my mom wouldn’t let him. My friends thought it was funny.
15. If you talk to me for any length of time you will notice that I love to read and that I read a LOT of blogs. Some days I feel like every sentence I say starts with “I read this blog the other day that said….” Other than at work, of course. Although, that would be awesome. “I read this blog that says you should increase your deductibles and add Inland Marine coverage for those tools in your truck.” Somehow I don’t think people would take me seriously. I have about 66 blogs in my Google Reader, and that’s after removing some of them when I got back on the computer after having James (I had to prioritize; I couldn’t keep up with them all).
So, that’s some info about me. Note to self: don’t claim you are going to start blogging daily the next day when you are leaving town for the weekend. It does not put you off to a good start!

One of my new favorite blogs
Sep 14th
I recently found this blog while reading another one (I can’t remember who it was), and I’ve decided that I love it. Stephen Budiansky’s Liberal Curmudgeon Blog is political and liberal, but based on facts. Charts, graphs, and historical details that are important to remember when looking at things going on today.
Anyway, I thought I would point you all toward it, as you might enjoy it as much as I do!
ps. More info to come on my awesome birthday. It was pretty fabulous.
Research, people, research
Sep 8th
Someone posted on facebook today, “My mom’s dentist said that if the government hadn’t bailed out companies that ran themselves to the ground and gave the money to the regular people instead, every PERSON (not family, PERSON) would have received just over $400,000 in bailout money. Any thoughts on that?” I’m reminded of a cartoon I saw just yesterday, where a character is on the computer, and someone off-screen asks, “Are you coming to bed?” The character says, “No. This is important….someone on the internet is WRONG.” I know I’ve seen it before, but I’m reminded yet again.
I know that we can’t correct every erroneous statement on the internet. But when you ask what I think about something that is so obviously flawed I’m going to tell you. I thought I was being pretty kind by just posting the link to the Snopes.com article discussing how wrong this is (it would be more like $430 per person…before they took out the fees and stuff for the cost of getting that money to “everyone”), and then saying “Too bad your mom’s dentist doesn’t research things before he/she spreads rumors.” And the fact that that amount of money is completely wrong is just the tip of the iceberg in this problem. I wish people would think things through. Look at me, being all unique and annoyed at the innacuracy of people on the internet! Oh, wait…
So after I posted about how awesome our baby is and how he sleeps through the night we hit teething. The same weekend he got his 6 month shots. Boy is this fun! There is much pacing back and forth with a somewhat whiny baby, which is preferable to the constant whining/screaming that takes place if we stop pacing/dare to sit down. I’m hoping that it will be a short period of this, because seriously. He’s still “sleeping through the night” in terms of not getting up and eating or anything, but he’s been waking up several times and we need to go give him his pacifier back so that he can go back to sleep. This is what I get for talking about how great he’s been. And we still don’t have it bad; I know that. And I’m knocking on wood, crossing my fingers and shutting up about it right now in hopes that it will not get bad.
We’ve begun “solids,” although they are all purees so far, so not really solid at all. He’s had peas and sweet potatoes. He seems to like both, although he likes the spoon a lot too. We have been doing it kind of off and on, since he’s been feeling so rough lately. I bought some fruit at the store last night, so we’ll try some of that soon.
I also purchased some teething tablets at the store. They are homeopathic! I thought I was being such a good mom, trying to avoid that darn baby tylenol (although we have been giving him a small dose of it occassionally; especially to help him get to sleep). Then I got an email from my aunt, letting me know that there is a possible link between Hyland’s teething tablets and infant botulism (a couple sources come up when you google it, but nothing from the company or any news source). It’s not for sure yet, and there are only a couple cases of it on the east coast, but that is definitely NOT something I want to add to the current list of issues, so we’ll be returning the tablets and asking the doctor about infant Motrin (my other aunt says this works better for her kids).
In non-baby news…there isn’t much. It’s my birthday next week, so I guess that’s exciting. I’m turning 30. Yikes! I’m not too upset about it. It’s just weird. We don’t have any plans that I’m aware of. Every year this happens. I don’t make plans, and then my birthday gets here and we aren’t doing anything and it’s kind of a (very minor) let-down. I should know better and just make some darn plans already. Jeebus. They don’t have to be extensive. Just dinner out with friends sounds good to me.
I suppose that means I should stop writing and start emailing, huh?
